There is a high expectation of Lee Zii Jia as he was ranked as the fifth seed for the World Championships. Furthermore, Lee skipped the Commonwealth Games to focus on the World Championships.

This decision drew much criticism in the aftermath of his exit. Lee’s loss of focus proved costly in the last few points in the first and third game. In the first and third game, both players’ points were almost equal at all times, but Lee made mistakes that allowed Zhao Jun Peng to pull away by a few points.

Jun Peng had lost to Lee Zii Jia in the German Open. With this win, Zhao Jun Peng successfully revenged and claimed his spot in the quarter-final against H.S. Prannoy of India. On the other hand, Lee’s next game will be at the Japan Open which begins on 30th of August 2022.

Zii Jia disqualified together with Pearly-Thinaah

Malaysia women doubles, Pearly-Thinaah, lost to Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida. Meanwhile, Men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik won against compatriots Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani by 21-17, 21-19.

Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik will take on the winners between South Korea pair Choi Sol Gyu – Seo Seung Jae and Taiwan’s LeeYang- Wang Chi Lin.
