Jonker Street's culture work committee has begun a series of activities such as upgrading the stage, setting up a time capsule, and decorating the New Year's Eve at Jonker Street. This is in preparation for the Melaka Tourism Year 2024. These upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of this year or early next year. They aimed to make the area a tourist attraction.

In an interview with the media, the chairman of the Public Works Committee, Datuk Willa Yen Thian Loke, said local tourists or foreigners have been coming to visit Jonker Street. During this year alone, an average of 20 official delegations from China were received every month.

Young Generations Are Flocking To Jonker Street For Sightseeing

At present, most of the Chinese tourists to Malacca sightseeing are backpacking, there has not been a large number of Chinese tour groups. Next year there is a chance that a large number of Chinese tour groups will visit Malacca for sightseeing.

Dato' Willa Yen Teng Loke also said that young tourists have already started to flock to Jonker Street for sightseeing, including trying out Nyonya costumes. The Melaka state government has also been actively promoting next year's Tourism Year and is publicizing the event on social media.

The Ministry of Tourism funds the cost of upgrading Jonker Street and is now in the tendering process, with design drawings provided by him, and the renovation will be completed to present a traditional Minnan and Lingnan elements.
