As Malaysia's 15th general election (GE15) coming soon, analysts say more politicians who defected from Umno over the past four years will return to the party.
They said the return of Sindumin assemblyman Yusuf Yaacob to Umno would affect this situation to continue happen.
Yusof left Umno to join Warisan ahead of 14th general election. In October last year, he left the party again and became an independent assemblyman supporting Prime Minister Ismail Yaakob and Sabah’s ruling coalition.
Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid from University of Science (USM) said most of the politicians who returned to Umno were from Warisan, which he said was to achieve the goal of those who “jump on the anti-Umno bandwagon”.
He added that the party has no clear long-term goals and is still struggling to gain support.
Umno wins multiple state elections to bring other parties’ politicians back to Umno
Faiz said the government's efforts to yearn for stability after Covid-19 pandemic gave the public more confidence to vote for the Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
BN won 21 of the 28 seats in Melaka election and 40 of the 56 in Johor state election. Again, removes any doubts they may have had before return to Umno,” Faiz said.
Meanwhile, another analyst from University of Malaya (UM), Awang Azman, said Umno's recent victories had influenced politicians to leave their respective parties and return to Umno.
