Netflix announced on Twitter that season 2 of The Squid Game will be available on the service.
Netflix also posted a message from “Squid Game” director Hwang Dong Hyuk to his fans. “Season 2 of The Squid Game is coming, and you will see Seong Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) and the mysterious Front Man (Lee Byung-Hun),” he wrote. A man in a suit with A ddakji (Played by Gong Yoo) will come back, and Cheol Su, the boyfriend of Young Hee, a wooden doll, will be introduced.
“It took 12 years for the First season of The Squid Game to officially launch last year, but it only took 12 days to make it the most popular Netflix original series of all time,” Hwang wrote.
“As a writer, director and producer, I want to say out loud to our fans around the world, thank you for watching and loving our series. Please join us once again for a whole new season.”
After the news broke, some fans wrote: “I'm so excited” and “love it! Can't wait to see season 2!” “We can't wait any longer.”
Director Hwang Dong Hyuk recently revealed to Vanity Fair that Seong Gi Hun, played by Lee Jung Jae, will definitely return for season 2, while the mysterious Front Man from season 1 may play more roles.
Separately, Hwang revealed in May that fans would have to wait until the end of 2023 or 2024 to watch the second season of The Squid Game, according to the Daily Mail.
“The Squid Game” tells the story of 456 players from different backgrounds, but equally deep in debt, in order to win a lucrative series of deadly children's games.
