Raheem Sterling, the former Manchester City’s forward, becomes the first men's signing of the Todd Boehly era at Chelsea. Sterling made his first appearance off the bench since joining from Manchester City for a deal worth £50m. The debut leaves a sour taste as Chelsea lose on penalties to Charlotte FC.

The Blues made their visit to Charlotte FC during their summer tour of the USA. Thomas Tuchel’s starting eleven includes Michy Batshuayi, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Edouard Mendy.
In the 30th minute, Christian Pulisic scored a wonderful goal by latching on to a deflected Batshuayi shot to finish a one-on-one. The USA international almost had a second three minutes later.
Chelsea made 10 changes at half time, with Mendy remaining in goal while Mason Mount took the captain’s armband. The new-boy Sterling could not make a difference for the Blues in the second half.
Charlotte FC scored an Equalizer in the stoppage time
Chelsea dominated possession but were unable to create threats against Charlotte FC.
In the 90 + 1 min, Charlotte FC scored a deserved equalizer after being awarded with a penalty. Daniel Rios converted the penalty and forced a penalty shootout.
All five penalty takers from Charlotte Fc found the net while Conor Gallagher from Chelsea unfortunately missed.
Thomas Tuchel is Disappointed with Chelsea's Performances, but he defended Sterling.
Thomas Tuchel is disappointed with the defeat. He said: “The last 20 metres of the pitch were not good enough, even in the first half. We found a lot of spaces to accelerate and penetrate the box but we struggled with our decision-making and precision in the last 20 metres. “
Tuchel defended Sterling’s unimpressive debut and claimed that there are many matches and trainings ahead.
It was a historic night for Charlotte FC, while Chelsea walked away with more valuable pre-season minutes under their belts.
