Japan Post is expected to use drones to deliver mail starting in 2023 officially. They will start operations in mountainous areas and outlying islands with a shortage of manpower.
The drones used are about 150 centimeters in length and red in color. It can carry up to 5 kilograms of documents with a range of about 35 kilometers.
Drone Are Fast And Inexpensive
Japan Post uses this drone option because of its fast and inexpensive. Drones can also be used for inter-post office deliveries.
In Japan, there are 4 levels of drone flight.
- Class 1 is in-visual flight, mainly used for aerial photography, bridge inspection, etc.
- Class 2 is self-regulated flight within visual sight, mainly used in spraying agriculture.
- Level 3 is an out-of-sight flight in unoccupied areas, mainly used in outlying islands, mountain logistics, etc.
- Class 4 is an out-of-sight flight in manned areas, mainly used in urban logistics, etc.
The Japanese government has relaxed the “Class 4” drone flight, so Japan Post will implement drones to deliver letters in 2023.
