UMNO National President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid said BN would contest 191 seats in the upcoming 15th general election. There will be at least 70 percent new candidates in the election. There are 222 parliamentary seats in the country, and BN will contest 191. The coming general election will also see friends of BN take to the field for the first time.

The Friends of BN is made up of the Parti Patri Malaysia (PCM), All India Forward Alliance, Indo-Muslim Malaysia, United Indo-Malaysia Party, Makkal Sakti, and the Malaysian Punjabi Party.

Ahmad Zahid also said they are appointing talented, highly educated candidates willing to help. They will also try to field 30% female candidates. Although some of the decisions will be difficult to make, it is important to ensure that people see that they have to make decisions to the demands of the people.

Ahmad Zahid also said that as president of both BN and UMNO, he must be fair and maintain a balance between keeping the old faces and fielding new ones. The final list of candidates has yet to be finalized.
