Constance Wu, an American actress, has spoken out about her time on Fresh Off The Boat (2015 to 2020), claiming a senior producer on the series sexually harassed her.
The 40-year-old, whose parents are immigrants from Taiwan, discussed the experience in Making A Scene, her upcoming biography.
The star of the love movie Crazy Rich Asians (2018) claims in the book that the producer, who is only identified as M, acted in a dominating manner and forced her to submit all business choices to him.
Wu also claims that in 2015, he sexually assaulted her at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game.
She spoke about it at a gathering last Friday as well.
Wu remarked at the Atlantic Festival in Washington, “I kept my mouth shut about a lot of sexual harassment and intimidation that I received the first two seasons of the programme.
She continued by saying that she was first too terrified to confront the abuse, but as Fresh Off The Boat became popular roughly two seasons in, she became more courageous.
She claimed that she was only able to refuse the harassment and intimidation from this particular producer once she no longer had to worry about losing her job.
To save the programme and her neighbourhood, she opted not to discuss the incident in public.
I pondered, “You know what? I dealt with it. No one has to be aware. I don't have to tarnish the standing of this Asian-American producer. I don't have to tarnish the show's reputation.
Wu's accusations shed new light on the 2019 social media squabble that started when she vented her annoyance about Fresh Of The Boat's decision to renew for its sixth and final season.
“I'm crying actually right now because I'm so unhappy. She had posted at the moment, “Ugh.
Internet users accused her of being arrogant in response to her response.
Nevertheless, Wu addressed the controversy at the Atlantic Festival performance, saying, “I wanted to have a new slate where I didn't have to start a show with all these memories of abuse. A few individuals were aware of the harassment, and it hurt to see them at work every day “buddy-buddy” with him despite the knowledge that he was sexually assaulting me.
I loved working on that programme and I liked the entire team, but it had a history of abuse, and even though I handled it after two years, I was eager for a fresh start, she continued.
Wu, who is dating musician Ryan Kattner and has a two-year-old daughter together, recently made an appearance on the TV show The Terminal List (2022), alongside Chris Pratt and Taylor Kitsch. – Asia News Network/The Straits Times
