Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar defended the decision to appoint his eldest daughter as his senior economic adviser, saying that Nurul Izzah's position as an advisor is unpaid and, therefore no nepotism is involved.

Anwar said he was open to comments from all sides but also explained that the appointment of Nurul Izzah was different from previous highly paid situations because she is here to help. He believes that if Nurul Izzah had been appointed to help without pay, there won't be an issue with a lack of transparency in her position, and she would have ensured that all contracts were in order.

He expressed his hope that the people would not compare him to other leaders who awarded multi-million ringgit contracts to their children during their tenure as prime minister. Even though some may be unhappy with the decision, he assured the government would continue fighting corruption. At the same time, it will not abuse its power and allow any official to enrich himself.
