The Terengganu government has passed several enactments outlawing shamanism and witchcraft. This is to strengthen existing state shariah legislation.
This amendment amends section 33A (females posing as males), section 36A (sodomy), and section 29A (females conceiving or giving birth to a child out of wedlock).
Strengthened Shariah Legislation With Harsher Punishment
Terengganu state executive councillor for shariah implementation, education, and higher education Datuk Satiful Bahri Mamat said they would try to increase the penalty, which is three years in jail, an RM5,000 fine and six lashes. They want the welfare of Muslims to be taken care of.
As for the new provisions on witchcraft and sorcery, a special committee will be set up under the Terengganu Religious Board to monitor the situation, ensuring that the Muslim community in Terengganu does not violate Shariah law to find an alternative treatment.
He also pointed out that the existing article only addresses the feminization of men's behavior, and another article was added in the amendment, which addresses the females posing as males. This is because more and more females are posing as males in the state, and the state government wants to address this problem.
