Najib's lawyer, Shafee, was cagey on the issue, saying he could not say yet whether Najib had applied to prison to help campaign during the general election.
Shafee was speaking at a press conference after Najib's trial on money laundering charges and abuse of power in 1MDB case. When asked if Najib was running in the upcoming elections, he said there were many interesting arguements in the matter, and he did not want to discuss it.
There Are A Lot Of Interesting Arguments Of Najib's Candidacy
Shafie said there were many interesting arguments for Najib's candidacy, but he did not want to make them public yet and would let the media know if necessary. As for whether Najib had applied to the Prison Service to come out to campaign during the general election, Shafee responded by saying, “I can't say”.
Dato' Nordin, director general of the Malaysian Prison Service, was asked whether Najib would be able to participate in the upcoming general election. He said that the prison service would not allow him to participate in election campaigning while serving his sentence.
Shafee responded by saying that this was the norm in prison and he would not do the usual things. Previously, Najib had applied to the Prison Service for permission to attend parliamentary sessions, invoking Section 31 of the Prison Act.
