Famous Malaysian Actor Zul Ariffin was fined RM30,000 by the session court on Oct 4 for uploading a lewd video on his Instagram account in March.

Judge Noorhisham Jaafar handed down the fine after Zul, 36, pleaded guilty to the charges.

Zul, whose real name is Zulkifli Ariffin, is accused of uploading a lewd video on March 18. According to the charges, Zul who uses the Instagram account @zul_ariffin knowingly creates and starts sending videos that are discordant with the intention of hurting others.

He is charged under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or services, which upon conviction is liable to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding one year, or both.

Section 233 also provides for a daily fine of RM1,000 for offences committed after conviction.

Zul is represented by Sivaram Prasad and Saresh Mahendaren, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Fazril Sani Mohamed Fadzil is acting for the prosecution. Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) prosecutor Mai Zairani Zainal Abidin also appeared in court.

During the proceedings, Saresh requested that his client be given a minimum sentence considering that the actor supports two family members, namely a 74-year-old father and a 48-year-old sister, and this offense is the first time it has been committed.

In March, Zul sparked controversy by uploading a sexy teaser for his upcoming drama “Perempuan Itu”, which will air during Ramadan in April.

When he deleted the video the next day, the MCMC launched an investigation into the matter after causing a public outcry.
